Moving to self-hosting on phpBB

Hello, We want to move onto self-hosting in phpBB. We are all fairly inexperienced and are unsure of which host provider to use and the capacity we might need. We were recommended siteground.com already but would like more opinions on this. On our forum we currently have over 1600 members and usually around 80-160 users are online (including guests) but we expect more during specific times. The most users online we recorded were 477 and I think that's around as much as we will get at our busiest hours. Thank you!

Are you currently using a free board host? If so, please be aware that you may not be able to migrate your board. Check their terms of service. (Applies to proboards and zetaboards, does not apply to forumotion, not sure about others.) If you can migrate the database, then we will need to know the timeframe used to compute the number of online users. Most board types will have this number in the online listing ("xxx users online over the past 15 minutes"). It is not possible to determine the type of hosting you will need without knowing that number. Having said this, I suspect that any decent shared hosting company will work for you. While the newsest version of phpBB is quite bloated compared to its predecessors, it's still miniscule compared to the likes of Xenforo or IP.Board.

You should be able to go with any decent shared hosting plan to start. I'm not aware of the phpbb software being a resource hog and it sounds as if your traffic is low enough to not need a VPS yet.

Yes we can migrate, we already made sure of that. It says the users online count is based on 5 minutes. Of course it's good news that we could get by with shared hosting but we just want to make sure. We've launched 5 days ago and had about 500k clicks since then and we expect significantly more traffic during certain time periods. Thank you very much for the help!

Just make sure you have enough CPU/MEM and disk IO for growth. Your forum will start to use more resources and so it is good to have a good amount of CPU/MEM. So any reputable provider will do who offers a fair amount of resources. There are no other special requirements to run phpBB/MyBB. Good luck!
