Help! How Move Domain Website but keep clients email on own server?

Posted by Andrew45466, 04-25-2017, 03:25 PM
Hi, it's Andrew and new here. I'm designing a website for a client. The client host their domain "client domain .com" with their own host, and use their email "emai @ clientdomian .com" The client wants me to host their website "client domain.com" on my own server, but they want to keep the email service on their hosting provider. SO, after researching with no answers so far, how do I host their website without disrupting/cutting off their email? Help - I tried changing the nameservers by pointing to my hosting service, but it stopped their email from working so I had to change them back. Any pointers would be appreciated, thanks again...

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum! In your DNS editor on your hosting service, simply set up your customers MX records there to look at the external hosting account (where they are already). This should stop their email from being cut off. If you are using cPanel you can do this under the 'Zone Editor' in the 'MX' tab :-) Hope that helps!

Another option is to change the "A" record on the existing DNS to point to your web server's ip. You will want to do so for www and the example.com A records.
