BlueHost are owned by EIG, a company that buys hosts and seems to drive them into the ground so you won't find a lot of love for them on these forums. DigitalOcean are a good provider of cheap VPS' so if you're comfortable managing the server yourself they would be fine. If you're just starting a blog you would probably be better off finding a reliable shared hosting provider, that way you can concentrate on building the blog and your provider can look after the server.

Agreed. Stay away from BlueHost and any other hosts owned by EIG. They buy out hosting companies, and don't provide anywhere near decent support (wait times of weeks). Haven't personally used Digital Ocean, but I don't personally think you need a VPS to start a blog. I would look into shared-hosting providers instead. You are sure to find a host that can offer a package with plenty of space, and bandwidth to host a blog on. Maybe one day you might need a VPS or something for a blog but I just feel it would be a waste of money and time (in self managing) to have a VPS for a blog. Check out the offers section here on WHT for some great shared hosting providers. Good luck to you!

These are two completely different kinds of providers with different target markets. If you have any experience managing a server, Digital Ocean should be a million times better than Bluehost. On the other hand, if what you want to start is just a simple website, as others have said, shared hosting is more than good enough. I'd avoid Bluehost, because their and EIG reputation speaks for themselves, but if it's just a simple blog and you've got a great deal there, why not, cross into the dark side if you want to. There's a million alternatives for good hosting though and i'm sure you'll find a better option than Bluehost if you look hard enough. There's also serverpilot which coupled with a VPS like from Digital Ocean or others works really well to minimize the headache of server administration.

You are comparing two different platforms and service provider, DO is purely an unmanaged VPS service provider. You would be responsible to setup the server, manage and troubleshoot any issues that you may face, further if you are just starting a blog, you do not need a VPS to start off with. A regular good shared hosting account is what I'd be looking for if I were you.

DigitalOcean is great, however you would need the experience in managing your own server if you go with them a provider

Looks like an attempt to promote a certain provider to me. Could you share some of your requirements and motivations behind choosing these providers primarily?

Whenever I see threads like, my first impression is like yours here, right or wrong - especially on the first post.

Why not? Considering the amount of negative threads already on WHT, EIGs would love to have some word of mouth, in one way or another.

I'm not sure about it, but it's possible maybe. I do see more of these questions pops up though, especially by people who are not familiar with hosting stuff, involving and comparing a 'well known' shared hosting companies like GD, Bluehost, Hostgator, etc with Digital Ocean or Linode. Looks like the reach of VC-funded & word of mouth marketing has reach the masses and companies like Digital Ocean are starting to get their name out to people who might or might not be suited to use their service.
