Haven't been able to connect to their site for quite a while now. fewcoin

Posted by Stek, 09-04-2004, 01:49 PM
For me too. I have two domains, who used domainsite DNS service, and they down too

Posted by raqsoft, 09-04-2004, 01:49 PM
also not working for me (from europe) have a look here their dns records are not resolving (at the moment)

Posted by terrix, 09-04-2004, 01:50 PM
I am experiencing the same, site was down yesterday for several hours, then it work again fo r some hour and now it is 16 housr or more I can't login. I have 50 name registered with domain site. The thing I can't understand is that i can ping and tracert domainsite.com. Wht could it means? I have sent two emails to their support asking for some info but still no answer (many hours ago).....I start to feel worried. What do you think?

Posted by tiggee, 09-04-2004, 02:00 PM
ns1.domainsite.com has address 66.17.140.22 ns2.domainsite.com has address 64.74.125.20 ns3.domainsite.com has address 66.17.140.20 ns4.domainsite.com has address 66.17.140.18 Well the whole problem with their DNS servers is that they really aren't that redundant. They have four systems on only two networks. This is unless they are doing IP anycast and from doing traceroutes they don't seem to be doing at all. They might be going through a DDOS attack and stuff like this can shut down anyone. Even Yahoo and Google are still vulnerable to a DDOS attack.

Posted by raqsoft, 09-04-2004, 02:06 PM
they should put at least one server to e.g. europe to get a bit more redundance

Posted by terrix, 09-04-2004, 02:07 PM
ha!I hope (for both they don't have nothing bad!

Posted by 4solutions, 09-04-2004, 02:16 PM
Fewcoin broke it! It was working before he went there and NOW it's broken... he did it! Naw, just joking... Alertra has it out all over the globe.

Posted by fewcoin, 09-04-2004, 02:22 PM
Hee hee, what's happening 4solutions? Yep, I have a domain I use for email forwarding at domainsite and that email is down too. I wonder if it has anything to do with the free dotinfo's? fewcoin

Posted by 4solutions, 09-04-2004, 02:36 PM
Hey fewcoin... I think it's everyone lining up to get their free .infos domains. They are a fairly new registrar and perhaps they underestimated the response of their offer. Or maybe the other registrars are trying to teach them a lesson with a DOS attack.

Posted by dmaven, 09-04-2004, 04:12 PM
aside from gaining clients domainsite gains nothing out of this. They have to pay affilias the registry fee for each registration and they will get a rebate in January. Does not benefit their cashflow at all

Posted by 4solutions, 09-04-2004, 04:31 PM
Definitely a long-term strategy. They were hoping that all these new customers will stay for renewals next year and also perhaps start registering other domain names for money. This is a textbook case of a publicity stunt (free domains) backfiring because now many of these potential new customers will simply remember Domainsite as not being reliable. It's sad.

Posted by wilsonalverez, 09-04-2004, 04:35 PM
For me not worth the grief, stick with reliable registrar

Posted by jheslop1, 09-04-2004, 05:03 PM
yep, still down

Posted by luckily, 09-04-2004, 05:50 PM
The site is still down. WAKE UP !!!

Posted by frattay22, 09-04-2004, 07:01 PM
Where did you get that info? Also a lot of people will take them on the offer of reg new names so they are going to benifit from it. One of the best marketing ploys I have seen in a while aside from ev1 ploy. Also still down

Posted by 3rdcoast, 09-04-2004, 08:00 PM
i thought a few free domains were cool, now i have to remind myself, sometrimes free just sux

Posted by frattay22, 09-04-2004, 08:24 PM
Yep most of the time not even worth the time

Posted by terrix, 09-04-2004, 09:21 PM
now to me is a full 24 hours the site is down, I am not happy . It would be very sad if they have put dow from a competitor but on the other side a company that intend to play a role in a large market should have some precaution, like a mirror server. How many new clients they could have loose in 24 hours? How many actual customers will move? Personally I think that if this situation is not resolved in short time and will happen again (well before yesterday the site was down for several howrs, so in three days the site was unacessible for more than 30 hours....) I MUST move somewhere else....and yes would be sad but no chances. I would hate the idea to pheraps go with the competitor that shut them down! .......all that assuming that this is the cause of the problem.

Because they are giving away .info, it probobly drew some negative packet storming

Posted by RossH, 09-05-2004, 12:29 AM
Ya, it's been down a lot

Posted by luckily, 09-05-2004, 02:25 AM

Rush and register domains!

Posted by raqsoft, 09-05-2004, 05:01 AM
does someone already know what the reason for this long downtime was ??

Posted by terrix, 09-05-2004, 05:02 AM
finally, is up again! hoping this wil never happen again......

Posted by raqsoft, 09-05-2004, 09:24 AM
well, they are down again - can't reach them from europe

Posted by frattay22, 09-05-2004, 10:09 AM
Still down, only one DNS server is working

Posted by raqsoft, 09-05-2004, 10:19 AM
also ping works for me (~162ms) ... seems as their webserver crashed

Posted by luckily, 09-05-2004, 10:21 AM
me too. ping was ok. what's happening to domainsite.com ?

Posted by frattay22, 09-05-2004, 10:36 AM
Can only be two things, over loaded and dos so take you pick either or it is most likely both.

Posted by luckily, 09-05-2004, 11:34 AM
Hmm, maybe both. I cannot understand why they don't announce the reason. People may think domainsite.com is unreliable because the site was frequently down with no reason.

Posted by terrix, 09-05-2004, 12:42 PM
down again I think if they say that is because an attack people may think they are too much vulnerable= not reliable If they say that is because overload , well could be not bad for them, good publicity anyway. If they dont'say anything, people is free to think wath they want, but in the doubt many would think they are not reliable... the second seem best. Anyway for who is signed with them is not good, personally I am confused, feel unsure, and stuck. I wrote to them saying I was happy the site was up again and please if they make me know what really happened, but no answer...now site is down again.

Posted by luckily, 09-05-2004, 01:27 PM
Now, up again !!!

Posted by terrix, 09-05-2004, 01:31 PM
up again also for me. It remember something to me but what....? dark and light, dark and light.

Japanese proverb: What happens twice will happen three times.

Posted by frattay22, 09-05-2004, 03:03 PM
Well the good ole marketing phrase "Positive or Negative publicity is good publicity"

Posted by Bashar, 09-06-2004, 01:25 AM
seems they didn't except the huge traffic from offering free domains

Posted by crucialx, 09-06-2004, 01:48 AM
Take a look at this: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...site.com#graph

Posted by Talal, 09-06-2004, 05:32 AM
Waw... Traffic rank 5,977. They should expect that. Am really waiting to read the number of domains that has been registered in that period. Guess?

Posted by terrix, 09-06-2004, 05:44 AM
well seem it is clear that the free .info offer have caused a lot of traffic on their site. This seem a marketing experiment. I am personally disappointed. they should be enough prevident and professional to front a situation like this, since they decided to test it, just for respect of the actual customers at least.

Posted by raqsoft, 09-06-2004, 07:24 AM
well, I proudly managed yesterday to get one free .info address just wanted to update contact data but domainsite still down

Posted by Bashar, 09-06-2004, 07:56 AM
i lost 2 .info domains because i was waiting for domainsite to come online lol it went back down now hehe.

Posted by Bashar, 09-06-2004, 07:56 AM
seems the bandwidth lost for this promotion costs more than the domain itself

Posted by dmaven, 09-06-2004, 08:00 AM
The downtime will probably make many people stay away, aside from the bargain shoppers.

Posted by Bashar, 09-06-2004, 08:11 AM
and save some bandwidth

Posted by b00ksa, 09-06-2004, 09:37 AM
so I was lucky to register 3 .info domains there. I assign 2 domains with my IP and are working now The other one I forward to geocities and currently off. Wondering what's goin on?

Posted by NH-Benjamin, 09-06-2004, 09:42 AM
Yeah bashar..... I really feel they are gonna spend more on this free promotion then they have in mind.... in bandwidth costs and bills from afilias for those who abuse.

Posted by fewcoin, 09-06-2004, 09:57 AM
I can't bring domainsite up again and, email forwarding from one of those free .info's do not work. Seems the problems persist at domainsite. fewcoin

Posted by eSology, 09-06-2004, 10:06 AM
I believe they didn't anticipate the load their server(s) would take with this offer. I'd be curious to know what the graph (per hour) would look like for domainsites .info regs compared to all other TLDs.

Posted by FHT-Ben, 09-06-2004, 10:51 AM
The site is down. I really need to manage my domains.

Posted by TheServerExperts, 09-06-2004, 11:16 AM
They are up and down like a ping pong ball i wonder if there logan is what comes up must come down cheers

Posted by tiggee, 09-07-2004, 01:29 AM
Well I wouldn't expect it to be that high with all of the downtime. No matter how popular your site is. If people can not access it then no one will use it.
