301 Redirects to a Domain
Posted by zjh055, 04-06-2017, 01:46 PM |
Hello, I recently created a website for a construction company that offers about 5 different services.
The main domain website is under the name of the business jdmcorporation.ca
After viewing the impressions the site was getting on GWT the owner had me purchase a number of additional domains that were directly related to some of the most popular impressions which mainly consisted of the city we live in + the specific service.
For example, "saskatoonmoldremoval.ca" was purchased, "saskatoonbuildingrenovations.ca" was purchased as well as a couple others.
Given that these are some of the most popular impressions for his main website we are thinking that we would set it up so that instead of creating landing pages for each new domain we purchased we would do a 301 redirect so if someone clicks on "saskatoonmoldremoval.ca" it redirects to his service page "jdmcorporation.ca/saskatoon-mold-removal/" and likewise for all the other ones. These individual service pages are already up and running on his main website and have been optimized with the best SEO practices.
I became hesitant to do this when I read on Moz the following about redirection:
Ultimately I do not want these additional domains, or the main website, to get red flagged by Google for doing this. I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys as to just how risky is this and if I should consider just creating new landing pages for each additional domain that was purchased.
Thanks for your time

Honestly so long as you aren't trying to game the system you should be fine I would think. That said a 301 redirection will, in most cases, cause the domain not to get listed - but the actual destination.
So if you have DomainA.com -> 301 -> DomainB.com/domaina - you will likely only find "DomainB.com/domaina" listed in Google instead of "DomainA.com".

As I understand it, you're not moving content or entire sites, so I don't see where this applies to your situation.
