Hosting a website on Intranet

Posted by iso9002, 04-05-2017, 03:15 PM
I have a basic question. Is it possible to run a website on a Linux server/VPS over local network/intranet? I want to install Wordpress or other CMS (Durpal, Joomla etc.). If it is possible, what is a recommended package, OS? control panel? etc. Can I use CentOS and WHM/cPanel?

Yes it is possible. You'll need to either need to access them via IP or have some sort of internal DNS to resolve the names to the IPs. You could also probably do something at your router and/or modify HOSTS files on each machine [not recommended really]. You can use CentOS and WHM/cPanel if you wish. There are a lot of options out there but cPanel/WHM is generally the most common when giving multiple hosting accounts out and managing the server in general.

Thank you Mike for your response. I think we do have Windows DNS server currently in use within our network, so I may be able to use that. I am used to normal web-hosting where we used to use WHM/cPanel and CentOS. However, here, I need only one website not multiple, do I still need to pay for WHM license? I vaguely remember that only ONE host was free with WHM/cPanel, but I am not sure. What other options do you recommend (preferably free) for managing the host?

If you already have a Windows server why dont you install a WAMP stack on it?

I had never done that and I was thinking Linux could be faster and requires less resources. Will WAMP Stack function just like Linux allowing me to use Linux based CMS packages?

There is no such thing as a linux based CMS. You can install any CMS on either linux, Windows or w/e. For most CMS to work you only need a web server, PHP process manager and a database. Since you are already using Windows, it wont take much more ressources by installing those - obviously it depends on the # of users. But this will help cut cost as you don't need another server running 24/7. You could go with a Linux VM inside your Windows but this is a waste of ressources if you only need 1 intranet website. Gluck

Thank you for your comment. I will go for it for now to see how much progress I can make with WAMP.

I've recently installed an intranet page using wordpress. Just installed Vestacp on a vm running centos and just adding a hostname entry in windows dns server. you can also do this in windows by installing WAMP. not sure cPanel will work without an external ip (assuming your intranet page will just be on the local network only).

Cool! That's what I've been trying to do. I had not heard about VestaCP considering the fact that it is free I may give it a try. The fact is that it is not going to cost me to have a Windows or Linux VM since we already have the virtualization in house in our company. What is important for me is ease of functionality and performance (either with Windows or Linux). I may get some more help from you guys as I am making progress. Thanks

For Windows you can try XAMPP and if it does not work then try WAMPP. Both are similar software and sometimes I use it for checking software functionality or while making a theme for wordpress, modification, etc. XAMPP or WAMPP. Local IP will not allow you to access outside of your VPS/VM.
