Is my new server better than my old server? Hardware/Specs included...

Posted by TheWebGuy3, 04-01-2017, 02:58 PM
My old hosting company got bought out by LiquidWeb. They're now migrating me over to a new server at Liquid web and I'm wondering if this new server is as good as my old one? (FYI, I used Wordpress on all sites and CloudFlare on one of them that will be on this server). I'll post the old server specs and new server specs below. Which is better? Are they moving me to a server at least as good as the old one? Thank you... Old Server Specs: Memory: 6GB RAM CPU Cores: 1 Dedicated Xeon CPU, 24 Burstable Hard Disk Space: 100GB RAID-10 SSD Space New Server "Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2620 v4 165G of RAID protected disk space with SSD 6G of RAM"

Wasn't this already a thread a few days ago...and was also missing information like the previous thread? If not...information is missing. You listed the exact processor in #2, but not #1 You listed Raid 10 in #1, but what it the Raid for #2 #2 "sounds" better at the moment, but in the other thread with the same question, it then showed the new server being a drastic downgrade from the old server.

Is this for a dedicated server or are you providing specs for a dedicated server that you have a VPS located on?

Based on some imagination, I guess your old server just had 1 virtual core of an Intel Xeon, and the new server has the whole processor for your own? In that case, your new server is better. But please, if you really want a proper answer provide the complete information. It's like asking if your Red car is as good as a Red Ferrari, since both are red.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate it. Okay, I found more info: Old Server Specs: Memory: 6GB RAM CPU Cores: 1 Dedicated Xeon CPU, 24 Burstable Hard Disk Space: 100GB RAID-10 SSD Space >> And they said: Your server is an SSD Hybrid VPS with 1 guaranteed core and up to 32 processor cores maximum if needed. Specifying the exact processor power is not exactly possible due to nature of VPS environment, but your hybrid VPS offers a significantly higher amount of processing power than a VPS. New Server "Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2620 v4 165G of RAID protected disk space with SSD 6G of RAM" Unlimited incoming bandwidth and 5TB of outgoing bandwidth. LiquidWeb's ServerSecure Product >>And they said: Raid protected just means that we have another drive set up in the server to mirror your main hard drive ...Does that help at determine which is better? They seem slightly different but I'm not sure which is actually better. If the new one is lacking in any department, let me know. Thanks.

By the looks of it your new server may be better as you have more storage. However, they dont mention which Xeon Model the 'old server' has, so yet not a 100 % confirmation. However, It's better to try yourself how your website / applications run in the new environment other than just comparing hardware specs of virutal / cloud servers you're not sure about.

Thank you. Okay, I have more info! The old server has Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 CPUs

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E...ntel-E5-2620V4 The old Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 is faster.

From a technically point of view the 2 processors are quite similar They both have the same number of core and same cache. "The old server" processor is older but has a faster clock frequency. "The old server" was on a raid 10 ( minimum numbers of drives for this is 4.. Half of the storage capacity goes to mirroring, so compared to large RAID 5 or RAID 6 arrays, this is an expensive way to have redundancy but if if something goes wrong the rebuild time is very fast( i.e.30 minutes for drives of 1 TB). We don't know what kind of scheme the new server adopted for is RIAD... However as RackService wrote WiredTree ( Wasn't it your previous hosting company?) was a nice company.. probably one of the best... a lot of customer will miss them and their expertise... but don't forget that they have been bought from LiquidWeb and not from EIG Plus do not forget that the Owner of Wiredtree was a Director at LiquidWeb years ago... Give it a try, test your new environment and please let us know! We are also curious to find out from the difference experiences from more people possible!

Chances are very less for you to experience any significant differences. We expect you to come back here in a couple of months to share your experience.

In fact your servers are very close to each other and if you have access to both you can check performance of both with some scripts and compare them in that way.
