Didn't you mention before that you can manage your own server? Why do you ask about managed services?

yes, I've decided to try it out. But, before I do that, I would like to hear an opinion or two.

Managed hosting is great if you don't know how to manage your own servers. If you do, you might save a few dollars and manage it yourself. It's really up to you.

Managed hosting is very useful is you don't have experience working with Linux and the services which run on top of it; It helps you also to focus more on your business, rather then solving technical issues, as they are quite a few. Unmanaged services can help you indeed save a few dollars but also can cause really really bad days with debugging your server and services. << Signatures to be set up in profile >> Last edited by Postbox; 01-31-2017 at 07:33 AM.

Managed Dedicated Server Pros: 1) The provider takes care of entire server setup including OS installation, control panel installation, security, optimization etc, without you needing to do any. 2) If its a fully managed provider, they will help you with your account related issues and migrations etc. However, this again may vary from provider to provider depending on their own company policies. 3) They will take care of OS updates, security audits etc.. if your managed services include them (again varies provider to provider) 4) In case of hardware failure, they will help you out with replacing hardware, followed by any restores (incase of drive failures), troubleshooting errors after restores etc. 5) They being the primary contact for server, there will be less time wasted during hardware replacement, as they will take the lead to get things back to working. 6) Depending on the type of managed services included and the provider's company policy, you may get free backups for your server Cons: 1) Expensive as compared to unmanaged servers 2) You need to work on everything, right from control panel installation to its security updates etc 3) Only expect your provider to help you with reboots and hardware replacement. Do not expect any kind of troubleshooting. For eg, if your server had a recent crash and has stuck at kernel panic. Unmanaged provider will give you access to KVM to get this fixed on your own. You can only request them to mount a live DVD etc, but do not expect them to troubleshoot this issue and get the server up for you. 4) Do not expect any backups provided by them, nor any other help that you may need, if you do not have any technical knowledge yourself.

Managed Services are good but you shouldn't just be dependent upon them to run a commerce business. Many users have no experience and want to operate hosting companies all under a "managed umbrella from the upstream provider; this is good but you should start learning some knowledge for yourself along the way. The biggest benefit of Managed Services is it allow business owners to focus more on the Sales aspects of the business.
