Server with IP from another country

Posted by merianos, 01-20-2017, 06:38 AM
Hello, recently I sell a server in a client of mine, and the server it is located in Germany. The client was aware of it from before he purchase the server. This morning he asked me to provide him with a Greek IP address on the server located in Germany. Is there any available solution for that request ? I already thinking of VPN but I don't know what can be the downsides of this approach. I don't know if that helps somehow, but the server is with CentOs and WHM/cPanel. Kind regards Merianos Nikos

I suppose the client wants it for seo? Probably (s)he could be fine with CloudFlare? They have greek ips / datacenter in Lamda/Athens. All .gr sites I serve through CloudFlare have greek ips. I am aware of this service http://getipaddresses.com/ that providers bulk addresses and can announce your organisation in the ips. Otherwise talk to your datacenter if they can help. To be honest, I didn't asked him what is the purpose he need the Greek IP, but I guess it is for SEO. Anyway, thank you for your reply @01globalnet I will give it a look !

Typically you get around this sort of thing by just updating the swip/whois/geoip + databases to get around that.

@01globalnet Thank you for the mention! Meaning that if you are the IP holder, or you are able to request via your provider that they update those things on their end, then the IPs would show as originating in the location of your choice. These things are done via the IP registry, etc.

Hi, As other explained you, you have two options. 1- Purchasing Greek IPs from RIPE IP Broker. 2- Changing the Whois information of the current IPs from the RIPE panel, update the databases, and then request GeoLocation databases to update their records, as of IP2Location, Maxmind, and so on. The first option will be easier to do, as the IPs might be already geo located to Greek, but the second option will be tricky, because IP2Location will ask you to show them traceroutes and other proofs which show the IP is physically located in Greek, to prevent any abuses from IPs. However, if you are reselling the servers, you should ask these option from your provider.

Downsides regarding updating SWIP/etc is that using false details to change the country is a frowned upon practice. The best solution for your customer (if he really needs a Greek IP address) would be to use a CDN with a Greek presence; e.g. Cloudflare as suggested above.

I just hope you aren't using bgp.he.net for this, because they use the RIR databases in a way that they doesn't take into consideration the "country" property of the inetnum entries, so basically if your IP was allocated firstly to Germany and then you've moved it to Netherlands for example (and adjusted the inetnum country to NL) they will not take this into consideration. These online databases have all sorts of criterias for this, but as long you keep the subnets properly updated, it will be enough for most cases.

You can make an Assignment and then request a maxmind correction request. That should take care of most geo location databases as maxmind is often used in the backend. In any case, you should ask your client to find out what exactly he is looking to achieve.

Also you can take vps from some hosting company and take like /29 or /28 and transfer the ip's via gre tunnel to your machine. I think this should work.
