Used a SoftLayer Cloud Instance?

Wondering if anyone who has used the cloud computing offering recently from SoftLayer can comment on how reliable and how well it performs. Thanks in advance.

I've had some experience with it in mid 2010, not too long ago. It was reliable (no notable downtime), and the CPU performance was good (SL seems to use a mix of Xeon X3460 and Xeon E5520). However, the SAN performance wasn't that good, to the point that running mysqldump would drown the cloud instance in I/O-wait. If you are running anything disk-intensive, I'd suggest getting dedicated machines for the database/file servers, and run everything else as cloud instances.

It's always good to get as much information about the SAN from your provider. Most will give you details and peace of mind as to what's running "under the hood" if you will. Any companies that aren't willing to divulge should raise concern. While I/O intensive applications/databases are traditionally suited better for dedicated resources, a high performance SAN consisting of SAS/SSD mix or pure SSD drives could do the trick for you. Quality comes with a price tag so if you really need it expect to pay for it. That applies to mostly any product/service within any industry though (web hosting is no exception). Hopefully everything is going well for you now, whether you're in the cloud or in a dedicated environment.

Also, If you need the real thing, Would be good idea to assure that the Performance is rated at 900 IOPs per second or more. In my opinion.

I tested an instance and ran the passmark disk test and disk bench and the instance actually out performed my current dedicated server. I was wondering how stable the softlayer instance was going to be. I was reading up on the softlayer twitter page and someone had issues with their instance and was told that it was because a disk had failed. When I asked someone at softlayer about it they said that the san had an issue in this case. According to sales one of the main features of the san and the cloud instances were for the redundancy at every level.
